A background check is where the records, whether criminal, commercial or financial, are tracked down and compiled. In the most common scenarios, these background checks are requested by prospective employers of the individual especially if the position is one that regards high security or requires a high level of trust. These include hospitals, schools, government, airports and financial institutions such as banks. There are government agencies that do these checks for a nominal fee but private companies are also used these days. A background check usually seeks to verify past employment information and credit scores and also to look up any criminal records.
The most common background check is the criminal background checks. These are not just done by employers in the above stated places. Most employers these days do these checks and the main cause for this has been the fact that most crimes these days are committed by previously incarcerated individuals. Most employers do these checks to prevent themselves from being victims of the same crimes in the future or to prevent the problems that come with an employee being under investigation. Most previously incarcerated individuals will be at some time in their lives be under investigation for another crime.
In most countries, individuals will be required to submit to a criminal check before they can legally buy a handgun. Most people with records that involve felonies especially those involving violent crimes or a firearm are not allowed to legally be in possession of a firearm. This is to prevent further crimes of the same nature. People who don't pass a criminal background check are usually not allowed under the law to work in certain areas of the society. These include jobs that are of special security concern such as in airports. Also people with a poor criminal history are usually not allowed to work with certain members of the society such as the elderly, disabled and children.
There are quite a number of way through which you can have a criminal background check done. There are many companies on the web that offer to do these services and they can provide an expanded version of the regular people search. They usually do this for a fee. For an added fee, you can also get a nationwide criminal report on an individual. The best way to access information on criminal records is to go directly through the state instead of through third party institutions. This is because the information from such parties while true may also be outdated. The state records are usually updated much faster, at the time of conviction.
Since it is the legal mandate of the employer to provide a suitable work environment, it is within his rights to have a criminal background check done to prevent future problems.
